Why Locals Love Hsiu Yuan Food Co 秀园小吃城
Hsiu Yuan Food Co 秀园小吃城 is a delightful Taiwanese restaurant nestled in the vibrant suburb of Mount Roskill, Auckland. This unassuming gem serves authentic Taiwanese cuisine with a comforting, home-style touch that resonates deeply with both locals and visitors craving genuine flavors.
Step inside, and you’ll immediately notice the casual and unpretentious dining atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. The setting is simple yet inviting, with basic but tidy tableware and seating that focus attention where it truly belongs—on the food.
The menu is a treasure trove for lovers of Taiwanese small eats, featuring a variety of 小吃類 (snack-style dishes) alongside enticing hot pots. One standout is their famed Ginger Duck Stew, a fragrant and hearty dish priced at NZ$22.80, whose rich broth envelops tender duck meat and warming spices. If you’re in the mood for something lighter but equally comforting, their selection of hot pots—Seafood, Pork, Fish, and Lamb Hot Pots—each around NZ$21.80, promises bold flavors and generous portions, ideal for sharing or indulging on your own.
Regulars rave about the generous servings, such as the “big plate for 5 choices of veggies and meat on rice” which combines vibrant, fresh vegetables with savory meats in a perfect harmony of textures and tastes. Pair this with a creamy, smooth black jelly milk tea for a refreshingly sweet finish that complements the savory dishes flawlessly.
What truly sets Hsiu Yuan Food Co apart is its dedication to authenticity and quality. The careful simmering, the home-style cooking approach, and the evident passion behind every dish create an experience that feels both sincere and profoundly satisfying. Customers like Bojan Krtolica describe it as a “hidden Taiwanese gem,” highlighting the free self-service soup and tea that add extra value to an already wallet-friendly dining experience.
Visitors can expect a variety of classic Taiwanese flavors such as Stinky Tofu—a delicacy that’s not for the faint of heart but beloved by aficionados—crispy chicken, and distinctive sausages bursting with flavor. The staff are consistently praised for their friendliness and willingness to assist, making the sometimes overwhelming menu approachable, even for first-timers.
Reviewers emphasize the freshness of the vegetables, the robust tastes of signature dishes like the fermented tofu hotpot, and the solid, unique pork chop that stands out little differently from traditional Taiwanese fare but is loved nonetheless. Efficient service ensures you’re never left waiting too long, and the off-street parking makes a convenient stop even during busy meal times.
Whether you’re a Taiwanese food enthusiast or a curious diner eager to explore authentic flavors beyond the usual, Hsiu Yuan Food Co provides a warm, inviting destination with dishes that offer both comfort and intrigue. This is a place where food feels made with loving care, and where every bite transports you briefly to the bustling night markets of Taiwan without leaving Auckland.

A hidden Taiwanese gem in Mount Roskill. You can get delicious and filling dishes for about $13 in addition to the free self service soup and tea. There’s some classic Taiwanese dishes like Stinky Tofu, Sausage, Crispy Chicken and various ‘hot pots’. There was also a range of milk teas on offer, too. The people are very friendly and helpful if you’re in doubt over what to order.

This is one of my favourite restaurants in Auckland. The food is fantastic and authentic! I can tell they spend lots of time and effort on cooking. The staff is friendly and helpful. I will definitely come back again and frequently! Highly recommended to everyone!

Very good value, authentic Taiwanese food with generous portions. Good quality home made style, wholesome food. My daughters could not finish had to take away leftovers. Drinks and deserts were very well priced at $5 or $6. Free soup and water. Service is prompt and efficient. Definitely worth coming back. Off street parking fits about 8 cars. Seating, tableware and utensils are basic and tidy. It is a regular lunchroom for workers in this commercial area.

This is our 2nd visit. Boss lady was present today and the vegetable dishes on display were cooked thoroughly and delicious (broccoli and zucchini were quite raw a few Saturdays back). The fermented tofu hotpot is our go to signature dish (ask for slightly less salt if possible). As others have mentioned, their pork chop is solid and unique to me, being non Taiwanese. Owner’s service (and infectious smile) is truly exceptional. Bless her heart. One less star for food due to added Msg. Soups are not prepared from bone broth stock. We thought Hsiu Yuan’s Taiwanese sausages were meh. Perhaps the ingredients available in NZ aren’t the same as decades past (eg. bleached imported garlic). Also, taste is subjective.

Incredible value and huge portions! The food is delicious and there's plenty of options. The free soup counter is an extra bonus. I wish I lived nearby and could come eat here all the time! The sticky rice stuffed sausage was a bit sweet for my tastes, but the portions were still great. They don't offer stinky tofu as an individual dish- it's only included in hotpot orders. Parking is a bit difficult during peak meal hours. Excellent, excellent value!

I’ve been craving Taiwanese sausage with sticky rice and finally found a place that sells it. We ordered the sausage with sticky rice, a rice combo (2 meats + 3 vegetables), and two pearl milk teas. The total came to around $50, which was excellent value for money. The food tasted great, and we were very satisfied overall.

$16 for 2 meat and 1 vege if not mistaken .. very big portion. I just went there for a drink with a friend. The drinks not too expensive, pearl milk tea only $6-7 dollars. You can get it hot or cold.
